The American band EyeHateGod are regarded as the undisputed pioneers of sludge metal, and with their 2000 album *Confederacy Of Ruined Lives*, they delivered a massive, weighty work that has lost none of its destructive intensity to this day. The album perfectly captures the essence of despair, raw anger and nihilistic gloom.

The album’s sound sets a merciless tone from the outset: thick, heavily distorted riffs crawl out of the speakers like thick mud, carried by a sluggish, brutally heavy drum groove. Frontman Mike IX Williams spits out his lyrics in an inimitable, utterly pissed-off and raw voice that conveys pure, unfiltered emotion. The songs oscillate constantly between agonisingly slow doom passages and sudden, mangy hardcore punk outbursts, creating an eerily hypnotic, extremely oppressive atmosphere.
